Drug Rehab for Women

Did you know that women are more likely than men to develop a substance abuse or drug addiction problem?  And that the reasons why women become addicted to drugs are often completely different than that of men.  Drug rehab for women is a chance to for women to get the help they need in a setting that safe and productive.

Why do Women Need Drug Rehab?

There are several gender specific reasons why women enter drug rehab.   Women are more likely to turn to drugs as a result of self-image issues.  Some use stimulants to attempt to maintain an unrealistic body image, while other use drugs as a means of escape because of low self-esteem.  Even more seriously, many women become involved with drugs because of a bad relationship.  Co-dependency is common among women.  They may want to quit drugs, but fear losing their drug-using partner if they do.  This can also lead to spousal abuse, crime and other potentially deadly exercises.

How do Women Get the Help They Need?

Single-sex drug rehab for women has been effective treating women for a variety of reasons.  First and foremost, the women-only environment provides a “safe place” for women to heal.  Also, studies have found that women in drug rehabilitation respond very positively to group counseling and support sessions that include other women exclusively.

Getting the Woman You Love into Drug Rehab

Whether it is your mother, sister, wife or daughter – if a woman you love is struggling with drug addiction, they need help.  Because most people, men and women alike, are often unwilling to admit that they have a problem with drugs, they are going to need help from their loved ones.   People who think someone they know is struggling with drugs are urged to learn the definitive signs and symptoms of drug abuse and drug addiction, and if someone meets those criteria, contact a professional interventionist immediately.  Once an intervention has been held, the woman should be checked into a drug rehab program right away.

What Goes on During Drug Rehab for Women?

There are three core elements which can be found in most drug rehab programs for women.  First, there is drug detox.   Detox (or “detoxification”) refers to the process of allowing harmful toxins to leave the system. Although uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms may occur during this period, it all takes place under medical supervision in a caring environment (and is essential if one wants to continue on into the rest of rehab).

Second, there is counseling and therapy.  Individual and group counseling are important because they give the woman a chance to open up about her problems with drug addiction and really explore the root causes, and potential solutions that lay ahead.  Also, as mentioned above, group counseling for women has been found to be highly beneficial to the rehab process.

Finally, drug rehab for women features aftercare programs.  Aftercare is training to help the individual maintain a drug-free life once they have left counseling and moved on into the “outside world.”  Aftercare takes on many forms. It often includes follow-up counseling and sometimes the use of 12-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous.
